This review is from: Cuisinart MCP-12 MultiClad Pro Stainless Steel 12-Piece Cookware Set (Kitchen)
[Update 7/24/09: I received a new lid today along with a bill for $4 for shipping. The weird thing is that this lid is different than all my others. It is noticeably heavier with a larger handle and different rivets. Did they redesign them since I purchased back in April? Was it due to a defect? I really wish Cuisinart would simply replace all my lids.]
[Update 7/13/09: I sent my rusted lid back to Cuisinart. Today I phoned them to check on the status of the warranty request. They claim the lids are not covered under the warranty and they now want $4 to mail my lid back to me. I am very disappointed with their service. Buyer beware]
I purchased this product based on the positive reviews I found on Amazon and elsewhere. My previous set of cookware was Anolon non-stick. It lasted about 6 years and I was generally pretty happy with it but I decided I wanted stainless. I originally purchased a set of All-Clad but returned it after I discovered Cuisinart Multiclad Pro at 1/3 the price. However, now that these pots are rusting I am second guessing my decision.
When the set first arrived the cookware seemed somewhat lighter than All-Clad but otherwise looked great. The first time I tried to boil water I noticed it took much longer, and I had to use a higher heat, than with my Anolon. I was a bit perplexed by this since everything in the Cuisinart instructions says to use a lower heat since it conducts so well. Apparently high heat will stain/discolor any stainless steel. But if the water won't boil the only thing to do is crank up the heat.
Other than the heating problem I have had some issues with sticking. I am sure some of this has to do that I am a novice when it comes to cooking with stainless. I am pre-heating the pan so that is not the problem. I am also experiencing a white, chalky residue in the bottom/sides of these pans. I am not sure if this has to do with the hard water in my area, the types of foods I am cooking (starchy pastas, potatoes, etc) or what. But I find myself having to frequently bust out the BKF (Bar Keepers Friend) to keep them looking clean. I guess the reality is that stainless is never going to be as easy to clean as non-stick.
However, the biggest problem I am having with this cookware is that the lids have started rusting. Most of the rust is contained to the lid handle and the area where the handle is riveted to the lid. The only logical explanation for this is that the lid is not 100% 18/10 stainless steel. I have found at least one other online reviewer who described this exact same problem. Apparently these pots used to be made in Korea but my set was made in China. I can only assume that the quality has gone down considerably in recent years vs. when the bulk of the positive reviews were written.
There is a lifetime warranty on the set so I am going to contact Cuisinart this week to see what they will do for me. If you are in the market for high-quality, lower cost stainless steel cookware you might want to try an alternative like Tramontina.
