Feature List
  • i.LINK digital input for perfect digital camcorder copies Also known as IEEE 1394 and FireWire. i.LINK is the worldwide standard for connecting digital video devices, used on digital home video equipment such as DV and D8 camcorders, as well as PCs. Conveniently, it carries all audio and video signals via a single cable. With i.LINK Digital Video input you can copy your home videos in their original digital picture quality.
  • VCR Plus+ for quick and easy programming With the VCR Plus+ system, all you need to do to program your video recorder is to enter the ‘Pluscode’ – a single code of up to nine digits (but usually less) that is printed next to each TV program in most TV guides.
  • Dual Media records on both DVD+R/RW and DVD-R/RW Philips DVD Recorders support ‘dual media’ recording - the ability to create recordings on DVD+R/RW and DVD-R/RW discs. Now you can buy any disc and the Philips recorder will always create fully compatible recordings, which can be played by any DVD player.
  • FlexTime to watch the beginning while recording the end With FlexTime you can watch a program while it’s still being recorded, thanks to the extreme speed of a Hard Disk.
  • Pause Live TV lets you take a break without missing a thing A very large built-in memory records the program you are currently watching when you press the pause button. When it suits you, you can resume the program from the moment you pressed 'pause' as if you're watching a live program.
  • Record up to 100 hours of TV on the 80GB hard drive
  • DTS, Dolby Digital and Pro Logic II surround sound A built-in DTS and Dolby Digital decoder eliminates the need for an external decoder by processing all six channels of audio information to provide a surround sound experience and an astoundingly natural sense of ambience and dynamic realism. Dolby Pro Logic II provides five channels of surround processing from any stereo source.
  • Progressive Scan component video for optimized image quality Progressive Scan doubles the vertical resolution of the image resulting in a noticeably sharper picture. Instead of sending a field comprising the odd lines to the screen first, followed by the field with the even lines, both fields are written at one time. A full image is created instantaneously, using the maximum resolution. At such a speed, your eye perceives a sharper picture with no line structure.
  • Movies: DVD, DVD+R/RW, DVD-R/RW, (S)VCD, DivX Multi-format playability allows you to play most disc formats for maximum disc compatibility and viewing pleasure.
  • Music: CD, MP3-CD, CD-R/RW & Windows Media™ Audio Multi-format playability allows you to play most disc formats for maximum disc compatibility and listening pleasure.
  • Picture CD (JPEG) with music (MP3) playback

This review is from: Philips HTS5800H DVD Recorder Home Theater (Electronics)
I purchased this unit about a week ago at a local Walmart for $348. So far it seems to be a really nice unit for the money. DVD movies sound great as well as music. Recording to the HDD is easy and picture quality is very good. I have not tried recrding to a DVD disc yet.The 3 hour buffer is nice and you can set it to not clear when you change channels if desired. A couple of minor gripes:

When using the buffer, you cannot fast fwd or rewind continously as you can with a TIVO. You can press the arrow buttons to move back 10 seconds or 30 fwd, or you can press the chapter buttons to go back and forth 5 min at a time.
***update** You CAN ffwd or rewd by pressing and holding the chapter buttons

There is a seperate remote for the dvd & home theater units. It appears you always need both. ALthough the home theater remote has buttons to control a dvd I have not found a way to get the dvd to respond to it. Also, I have not found a way to control at least the volume of my Sony TV with either remote.

Overall it appears to be a very good value
