To guarantee adequate guardrail protection, Walker Edison advises using a mattress with a 9-inch thickness or less. This was purchased from my college daughter so save space when sharing her bedroom with another girl (who also purchased the same bed). It is high enough to allow her to put a desk under it and it really makes a big difference in their space utilization. The only negative is that it is somewhat 'rickety' that took several days to get used to but is now no longer a problem. If you are looking to save space, this is a great buy.
